In 2002 patronul WWE Vince McMahon tinea un discurs in care le cere tinerelor staruri aflate in ascensiune sa dea dovada de agresiune nemiloasa pentru a-si putea castiga un loc intre legende. Inspirat de acest discurs, un pusti, pe numele sau John Cena avea sa fie la doar un pas de a-l invinge pe medaliatul olimpic de la Atlanta, Kurt Angle. Indurand un Angle Slam si un Ankle Lock, Cena pierdea pana la urma insa impresia pe care a lasat-o a fost din start una extraordinara.
In urmatoarea perioada Cena avea sa-si dovedeasca abilitatile de rapper, lansand o serie de freestyle-uri in care isi ataca adversarii, umorul si ironia din acestea atragand atentia fanilor care au inceput sa-l aprecieze. In acest timp Cena beneficia de o sansa la centura WWE detinuta de Brock Lesnar, nereusind insa sa cucereasca titlul.
In 2004, Cena ajungea intre ultimii 6 la Royal Rumble, fiind eliminat in cele din urma de Big Show. De altfel conflictul cu cel mai mare om din wrestling avea sa-i aduca lui Cena primul sau titlu, cel al Statelor Unite, castigat chiar la Wrestlemania XX.
Un an mai tarziu, Cena isi depasea performanta din 2004, terminand pe locul 2 la Rumble. Initial atat el cat si Batista s-au eliminat reciproc, Vince McMahon fiind nevoit sa reinceapa meciul pentru a determina un castigator. Acesta avea sa fie Batista insa pentru John Cena pierderea nu urma sa fie atat de mare. Cena castiga peste cateva luni in fata lui Kurt Angle finala unui turneu ce-l propulsa direct la WrestleMania intr-un meci impotriva lui JBL, campionul WWE de-atunci.
Pe 3 Aprilie 2005, la WrestleMania 21, John Cena il invingea via pinfall pe JBL si devenea pentru prima data in cariera Campion WWE. Doar doua luni mai tarziu, tanarul rapper avea sa lase SmackDown-ul pentru RAW, fiind primul luptator transferat intre cele doua brand-uri in timpul unui imens Draft. Au urmat conflicte teribile cu Chris Jericho si acelasi Kurt Angle, orchestrate de managerul RAW-ului Eric Bischoff.
Problemele pentru Cena au inceput la New Years Revolution 2006, cand desi iesise invingator din cel mai dur meci posibil : Elimination Chamber, s-a trezit pus fata in fata cu Edge, care tocmai isi incasa sansa la titlu castigata la WrestleMania. Obosit si plin de sange Cena avea sa piarda in cele din urma titlul desi a fost nevoie de doua spear-uri pentru aceasta. Visul lui Edge a durat doar 3 saptamani, Cena recastigand centura la Royal Rumble 2006.
La WrestleMania insa, Cena avea sa fie pus fata in fata cu cel mai mare cosmar al sau : Triple H. Asasinul Cerebral, de 10 ori Campion Mondial, era principalul favorit al acestui meci. Era momentul pe care toti fanii acestuia il asteptau, momentul in care Regele Regilor avea sa revina pe tronul sau. Cena insa n-avea sa fie de acord si laWrestleMania 22, in fata unui public partizan, care nu s-a sfiit sa-si manifeste preferintele pro-Triple H, a reusit sa-si apere centura, facandu-l pe "The Game" sa cedeze cu un STFU.
Cena avea sa piarda centura in afara teritoriului RAW, mai precis in re-inviatul ECW in fata lui Rob Van Dam. Intr-o atmosfera ostila, meciul starnea controverse fiind nevoie de un Spear al lui Edge, un Five Star Frog Splash si o numaratoare pana la 3 a managerului ECW pentru ca Cena sa fie invins. Rob Van Dam n-a tinut nici el prea mult titlul, acesta fiind castigat la scurt timp de catre Edge si astfel conflictul dintre acesta si Cena era reaprins.
Frustrat de incercarile nereusite de a castiga inapoi titlul, gratie interventiilor externe ale Litei, Cena lansa o ultima provocare campionului Edge. Ultimul meci 1 la 1, pe care daca John il pierdea, era obligat sa se intoarca in SmackDown. Meciul avea sa fie un TLC (Mese, Scari si Scaune), meci pe care Edge nu il pierduse niciodata si in care Cena nu participase pana atunci. Mai mult decat atat, arena in care se desfasura competitia se afla in Toronto, Canada, orasul natal al lui Edge. Contrar asteptarilor si impotriva tuturor sanselor John Cena avea sa isi recastige titlul, numai dupa ce l-a trimis pe Edge cu un F.U. prin doua mese.
Anul 2007 incepe in forta pentru John Cena, pe care il asteapta doua meciuri interesante, intai impotriva lui Kevin Federline la RAW, iar apoi isi va pune titlul in joc in fata neinvinsului Buldozer Samoan : Umaga.
